Gender & Sexuality Equity Awards

Each year, the Margaret Sloss Center for Women and Gender Equity and the Center for LGBTQIA+ Student Success present awards and scholarships to recognize individuals and groups that have advanced gender and sexuality equity for women and LGBTQIA+ people. These awards support the leadership and academic success of women, LGBTQIA+ students, adult and non-traditional students, and single parents.

 

 

SCHOLARSHIPS

Division of Student Affairs Adult Student Scholarship

Deadline: Friday, February 1, 2019 11:59 PM CST

The Division of Student Affairs Adult Student Scholarship is awarded to an Iowa State undergraduate student 25 years old or older. Awarded $1,000 each academic year and is renewable for up to four years to adult undergraduate students enrolled part-time or full-time.
 

Lee Hadley Scholarship 

Deadline: Friday, February 1, 2019 11:59 PM CST

Created to honor Lee Hadley, a positive force in the lives of students and in the English Department at Iowa State University for 26 years! This $1,000 scholarship can be renewed upon selection committee approval for four years as the student maintains full-time enrollment and satisfactory progress towards earning their degree. The Lee Hadley Scholarship was also created to motivate and reward adult students striving to reach their dreams!
 

Rosenthal Scholarship

Deadline: Friday, February 1, 2019 11:59 PM CST

Created to motivate and reward single mothers of Iowa striving to reach their dreams! Awarded $1,500 to non-traditional, full-time undergraduate single mothers.
 

Scott Rohlf Presidential Leadership Initiative Award

Deadline: Friday, February 1, 2019 11:59 PM CST

This scholarship has been presented annually since 1995 to one student who has demonstrated leadership and involvement in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, etc. (LGBTQIA+) community at Iowa State. The purpose of the scholarship is to complement successful academic experiences by partially supporting student leadership and involvement in the LGBTQIA+ community at Iowa State.
 

Walter J. Allen and Shaun B. Keister Scholarship

Deadline: Friday, February 1, 2019 11:59 PM CST

This scholarshop is open to undergraduate (sophomores, juniors, and seniors) and graduate students who have demonstrated leadership and involvement in promoting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, etc. (LGBTQIA+) student activities and in the promotion of a positive identity for LGBTQIA+ students throughout the University community. 


Craig E. Claussen LGBTQIA+ Endowed Scholarship (new scholarship - released Monday, Jan. 14, 2019)

Deadline: Friday, February 1, 2019 11:59 PM CST

This scholarship is open to any student who has deominstrated leadership and involvement in promoting and participating in the activities of Center for LGBTQIA+ Student Success and LGBTQIA+ community at Iowa State University.

The Margaret Sloss Gender Equity Award

Deadline: Friday, February 1, 2019 11:59 PM CST

This award is bestowed upon an individual or group to acknowledge their commitment towards gender equity at Iowa State University. Nominees of the Margaret Sloss Gender Equity Award should have demonstrated a commitment to helping women gain equity within the university and/or the Ames community. Significant contributions come in many forms, from public acts such as organizational leadership, to personal acts such as academic and professional mentoring. Examples include:

  • Promoting awareness and understanding of the effects of sexism or prejudicial attitudes upon women
  • Promoting attitudes and the use of skills and techniques which work toward the elimination of a sexist ideology
  • Demonstrating an unusual and unique effort to promote gender equity in the classroom, university or community
  • Promoting the development of policies and procedures designed to achieve gender equity
  • Raising campus/community awareness of feminist issues

 

W. Houston Dougharty Ally Award

Deadline: Friday, February 1, 2019 11:59 PM CST

The W. Houston Dougharty Ally Award is bestowed upon an individual or group of individuals who have advocated on the behalf of LGBTQIA+ students with a social justice approach.
