Margaret Sloss Women's Center Advisory Board
Who We Are
The Mission of the Margaret Sloss Women's Center is to promote equity on the Iowa State University campus for
women. The Women's Center works to promote social change through the following:
- The creation of community and networks for women.
- Education through institutional training and curriculum development, in
collaboration with academic and administrative departments and units.
- Programming to empower both women and men to participate in a fully equitable
society.
Advisory Board Operating Guidelines
The MSWC Advisory Board was created as a way to enable and encourage participation of students, staff, and faculty
in the process of achieving our mission. The Advisory Board:
- Provides advice, perspective, insight and guidance to the Director of the
MSWC
- Participates in and supports Women's Center Activities
- Gives feedback and advice by attending and participating in two meetings each
semester, actively involved in one of three subcommittees, and responds to e-mail
- Collaborates and communicates with other women's programs to provide programming
for the campus community
MSWC Advisory Board Subcommittees
Assessment Committee
Assist with the development, implementation, and analysis of campus "needs assessment" projects for
students, staff, and faculty. Advises Center Director on evaluation of programs/events/courses, and assists in
year-end report framework and editing.
Strategic Planning Committee
Assist in the development and dissemination of the Center's Strategic Plan, Goals, Objectives and Work Plan for
each academic year.
Development Committee
Assist with the selection of four scholarships (The Lee Hadley Scholarship, The Rosenthal Scholarship, The Adult
Students Scholarship Fund, Student Affairs: Adult Student Scholarship) and the Margaret Sloss Gender Equity Award.
Assist with the exploration of grant writing and fundraising efforts.
Membership
Members are appointed by the Associate Provost and Dean of Students, in consultation with the MSWC Director and
Advisory Board Chair. Recommended membership (19 maximum, excluding ex-officio and chair):
- Faculty Members (2-4)
- One representative of Women's Studies
- Faculty Senate Committee on Women and Minorities representative (1)
- Professional & Scientific Members (2-4)
- Merit Members (2-4)
- Community Members (2-3)
- ACCESS Representative
- Students (2-3)
- Undergraduate
- Graduate
Term:
Members have a set term of 3 years with the term being renewable once.
Chair:
The Chair of the Advisory Board is appointed by the Associate Provost and Dean of Students, in consultation with
the MSWC Director. This position is not part of the membership representation above. The Chair will serve a
two-year term.
Position Description
- Works with the MSWC Director and staff on issues that need attention or discussion
- Facilitates Advisory Board at meetings, via email and/or conference calls.
- Works with the MSWC Director; Provost's Office; and the Dean of Students Office
on the appointment of new members to the Advisory Board.
- Provides written reports to the Director annually.
Reporting:
An annual report detailing the Advisory Board's activities will be sent to the MSWC Director each academic year
(for inclusion in her annual report).
Meetings:
The Advisory Board will meet twice every semester, and are also encouraged to connect electronically.
