For ISU Students
We are here to help you be successful during your time at ISU and look forward to celebrating your accomplishments. We are also here to help you through the tough times.
Tips for Succeeding at Iowa State University
- Utilize both your academic resources and staff at the Dean of Students Office. Learn about resources that might be most useful to you while you are at ISU.
- Know university policies and procedures. Familiarize yourself with the Student Disciplinary Regulations, the ISU Catalog, and any other policies that affect your success at ISU.
- When you have an issue, work to resolve it. Unless you are willing to let it go, it's important that your voice is heard by the people who need to hear it.
- Check your emotions and express your feelings appropriately. It's okay to be upset about your situation, but when it's time to solve your problem, letting your emotions dictate how you communicate with others will not help your process.
- Put your concerns in writing and ask for a response in writing. This will give a written record of what was discussed and will provide valuable information if you choose to appeal the decision.
- Know the names of people to whom you have spoken. It is important to have names so you can effectively document your situation. It is also helpful so that others know who you spoke with and can contact them with questions. It can also prove useful if you need to make contact with the same person twice.
- If you will be missing class, provide professors with written documentation about your absence. When possible, inform professors of your absence in advance. When you can't contact them before an absence, communicate with professors immediately upon your return to class to make up missed work and to show them your documentation.
