APEX Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am interested in participating in APEX, but I can attend only part of the summer program. Can I still participate?
A: APEX is always during the Summer Session II at Iowa State University. It is required that you attend the entire 8-week period. Programming starts a week ahead of classes and it required that you attend that as well.

Q: What costs are covered by APEX?
A: Tuition, room and board (meals) are all apart of the program. Expenses related to traveling to and from Ames, books & supplies, and personal items are not included.

Q: How many credits can I earn?
A: You could earn up to 8 credits towards your intended major.

Q: What are the courses offered?
A: General education classes such as English, math, psychology, and sociology are offered through the program.

Q: How will I know what courses I need to take?
A: An academic advisor in your college will develop your APEX schedule according to your ACT/SAT scores, any college courses already taken as well as based on placement tests that you will take during your ISU Orientation.

Q: Do I have to attend orientation?
A: Yes. All APEX participants are required to attend their respective college orientation sessions the week before classes begin for Summer Session II. Important information about the campus and your college is shared during orientation. Placement tests could determine what courses you could take during APEX, if the courses you have previously been placed in are above/below your testing. You meet with an academic advisor in your college to review your placement exam scores. You will also prepare your Fall class schedule, create your e-mail account, and have your picture taken for your student ID card.

Q: Where will I live?
A: You will live in an APEX designated residence hall. APEX Peer Mentors, who are upper class students , will live on the floor and will help you adjust to college life. They will also assist you with understanding university and Department of Residence policies governing student conduct.

Q: How soon can I move into (check into) my room for APEX?
A: You can move into your room the day before your scheduled orientation. Your parents can follow the directions outlined in the orientation information to secure housing during orientation. Our Peer Mentors will guide you to your first scheduled orientation activity.

Q: I am not going to be going home in between the school sessions, where can I stay - in the dorm room I will be living in for APEX, or can I move into my fall room?
A: Yes. You will be able to make necessary arrangements to move your belongings and yourself into your fall room assignment if available at the end of APEX.

Q: Is transportation provided to and from the airport/bus station?
A: Yes, APEX assists out-of-state students by providing shuttle service from the airport/bus station. After you've booked your flight, be sure to call us with the following information: airline, flight number, and date and time of arrival at the Des Moines International Airport, Des Moines, Iowa. If you're traveling by bus, notify us of the date and time of your arrival in Ames.

In both cases APEX staff members will be available to meet students and provide transportation to the residence hall. However, come FALL semester - Students will need to provide their own transportation to the campus from the airport/bus station.

Q: Can I bring my car to APEX?
A: We strongly recommend you DO NOT bring a car for the summer. It will not be beneficial as parking of your vehicle will be some distance from your residence hall. Transportation to and from sponsored weekend activities is provided. In addition, Cy-Ride bus, the ISU campus bus service provides access to most every area of Ames and is free for students.

Q: Can I go home on the weekends?
A: Yes. You can only go home (maximum is three-3 weekend visits) when there are no APEX mandatory events. You are encouraged to stay each weekend to participate in APEX student planned weekend activities (not mandatory). You may miss out on important study time and group study sessions that will help you do your best during the program. A lot of students often use the weekend to catch up on homework or writing assignments. You could use the weekend to explore the Ames community and develop your friendships within APEX and other ISU students.

Q: Who do I contact if I need more information?
