New Student \"Welcome Letter\"

Dear Student:

On behalf of the entire staff at Student Disability Resources (SDR), we want to congratulate you on your recent choice at attend Iowa State University-- Iowa's premier land-grant institution. We want to let you know that our office and staff is dedicated to ensuring that each student has access to all educational opportunities offered at ISU.

As you know, self-advocacy and self-determination skills are critical to a successful experience for all college students. The staff at Student Disability Resources at ISU is committed to working with you as a student-- not just your diagnoses-to help you attain your educational goals. With this as part of our guiding philosophy, our staff would like to get to know you as a student and member of the ISU community.

If you want to receive academic accommodations while studying at ISU, you will need to work closely with SDR staff and your professors/instructors to help make sure that everything you need in terms of supports and/or accommodations are in place and ready when you begin classes. To see that this happens, please:

  1. Meet/work with SDR staff to review necessary documentation from your healthcare providers to establish eligibility.
  2. Contact SDR immediately if you have already supplied documentation to our office and have not heard back from us regarding your eligibility for accommodations.
  3. Contact us immediately if you know that you will need specific supports or accommodations in your residence hall so we can help get the process started.
  4. Meet with an SDR staff member before classes begin every term to review your status and complete Student Academic Accommodation Request forms (SAAR) for each class.

PLEASE NOTE: No accommodations will be granted without establishing eligibility and completing SAAR forms. Accommodations are not retroactive.

Again, "Welcome to Iowa State University"!!! We are glad that you are going to be part of this exciting community. Feel free to contact us at 515-294-7220 or via email at
