ASC Presentations, Workshops, and Special Events
General Presentations for Classes and Organizations
The ASC staff is available to facilitate basic presentations for your class or organization. These presentations cover basics of skill development and are not tailored to any specific group. Our topics include:
- Overview of All ASC Programs/Services (Description of Tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, Psychology 131, Academic Intervention, Academic Consulting, and additional resources. Please preview this PowerPoint, and feel free to use it in your class/organization!)
- Overview of a Specific ASC Program (Greater depth or focus on one of our programs.)
- Time Management (Strategies for effectively understanding time management, particularly as it relates to study skills.)
- Test Preparation (Strategies to be used throughout the semester to prepare for test, suggestions for reducing test anxiety, and tips for test day.)
- Study Skills Overview (Comprehensive discussion of active study strategies such as note-taking, reading, and information application)
- Learning Styles (Based on Kolb's four-stage cycle of learning, this presentation is intended for students who will continue to work together after the presentation.)
- Special Requests can be considered to fit your needs. For example, we frequently work with university staff and student leaders for training.
Plan for 30-45 minutes per topic. You must submit your request using the online presentation request form at least 2 weeks in advance to allow for adequate time to arrange a presenter. Expect to receive confirmations of your request via e-mail.
Special Workshops Planned to Meet Your Needs
In addition to our basic presentation topics, we can support development of an academic workshop for your group through:
- Adapting academic planned presentations to your group needs,
- Providing you with resources you need to facilitate your workshop, or
- Planning and co-facilitating a workshop for you.
To best tailor a workshop to fit your needs, begin by contacting the ASC to schedule a meeting with a staff member. We strongly prefer collaborative planning for workshops to ensure the needs of your group members are met. Please begin planning at least 2-3 weeks in advance.
Suggested Locations for Requested ASC Presentations and Workshops
Locations for ASC presentations are up to the requesting individual or group to confirm. We can do presentations with or without A/V equipment; however, projectors/screens increase our success with larger groups.
- For general presentations on campus, classrooms can be reserved through FP&M Room Scheduling.
- For presentations in Residence Halls, we recommend larger common areas for ease of access and comfort. We recommend communicating with your Hall Director about your request.
- For Greek houses, please plan on using your largest space possible but the arrangement of your space is important for presenters to speak with the group.
- Hixson-Lied has classroom space that can accommodate 60 people. Contact the Hixson Opporutnities Awards office (294-6479) for availability of this space.
- If you have a unique location request, please identify this when you make your request.
Peer Educator Training and Resources
Through a series of training workshops and additional resources, we seek to provide support for student leaders who serve in an academic role for peer students. Review our Introduction to the ASC Peer Educators and view the schedule of workshops targeting Peer Educators.
An Important Note About Availability...
As much as we enjoy coming to you to facilitate a presentation or workshop, there are certain times of the school year when our availability is limited. Therefore, your understanding and advance planning during the following are very much preferred:
- The first 2-3 weeks of each semester are very busy in the ASC and our schedules fill up quickly. If you would like a presentation during these weeks, please plan ahead at least one month.
- Accommodating or replying to your request during winter, spring or fall break is very unlikely.
- Presentations during summer break are possible, but more than 2 weeks notice during the summer is rather helpful.
Please also keep in mind the availability of your group-we do want to accommodate the most people possible when the need is highest. Thank you for your support!
