Conducting Sessions
Content of tutoring sessions varies by tutee needs, course content, and the facilitation skill of the tutor. The key to successful tutoring sessions is student involvement. The more the tutee speaks, reads, and writes during the studying process, the more he/she will learn. Here is a guide to get you started and the students involved:
- Review the material covered in the previous session. This will allow you to gauge what material the tutees retained. Also, it focuses the students' attention on the course material
- Ask the students what they have been doing in class (What's going on in class? Having any problems? Anything you would like to cover? ) Listen to everyone, then decide on certain objectives for the session.
- Spend the bulk of the session working on the objectives. Help students learn the material by questioning, clarifying, explaining, etc. Help students become independent learners by encouraging them to think through problems themselves or with the aid of other tutees.
- Wrap up the session by questioning the students on material practiced in the session.
- Close the session by discussing what the students need to know for the next session.
