The First Tutoring Session
Remind students to pick up their assignment packet from our office. If tutees have not yet picked up their assignment form, we do not know you are meeting with them. Hence, the tutee is running the risk of being dropped from the group.
Break the Ice. Loosen up a bit, give a little background information about yourself and ask each tutee to do the same. Keep in mind many times students seek out tutoring because they feel uncomfortable asking questions in class, or, in large lectures, they may not even have the opportunity to ask questions. Sessions should provide students with a relaxed learning environment. Be friendly, but remain professional.
Get the syllabus Prior to the first session, ask your tutees (each of them) to bring a copy of their syllabus or meet at a location near a copy machine. The syllabus is your map. You should utilize it to keep the students on track, progressing through the course material step by step.
The textbook. Make sure everyone brings their textbooks and notes to all sessions. We would like to be able to provide textbooks for all our tutors, however due to cost factors, we cannot. You can check the reserve area in the library, with the department (i.e. Chemistry, Physics, Economics) and with friends. If you have exhausted all options in your search for a text, please come talk with us and we will see what we can do.
Cancellation Policies. Please remind students of cancellation policies. A student will be dropped from the group for the remainder of the semester if they:
- Have three call cancels,
- Have 2 no shows, or
- Have two call cancels and one no show.
Time Sheets. The assignment sheet mailed to you includes all the information you will need to fill out the time sheet. Ask the students if all their information is correct.
