Becoming A Tutor
Tutoring is an excellent opportunity to enhance your communication skills, retain knowledge of completed coursework, and gain the necessary experience to impress potential employers.
Each semester, over 200 tutors are hired and trained to provide academic support to students in a variety of undergraduate courses. A variety of workshops are held each semester to not only better prepare you for tutoring situations, but to gain valuable transferable skills that will help you in other aspects of your personal and professional life.
Tutors who have not yet earned their bachelor's degree earn $8.00 an hour, and tutors who have completed a four-year degree program earn $9.00 an hour.
What are the Requirements?
Qualifications:
- Earned a grade of B or higher or received AP credits in course(s) you want to tutor
- Must have at least a cumulative GPA of 2.5 (some exceptions apply)
- Must submit one reference form from an instructor, academic advisor, employer, or any ISU staff member
- Knowledge of subject matter
- Ability to effectively communicate subject matter
- Patience and respect toward others
What is the Hiring Process?
If you are interested in being a tutor, the process consists of five basic steps:
- Taken or tested out of the course(s) you would like to tutor;
- Complete an application form, either on-line, or in our office;
- Call us at 294-6624 to schedule an interview;
- Submit one positive reference form from an instructor, academic advisor, employer, or other ISU staff member (Please download the reference form under Resources)
- Complete a one-hour orientation.
