What
are the benefits?
There
are many possible benefits of using computer technology in the learning
process, but eLearning also has its limitations. Read through the links
below for an idea of how eLearning may be beneficial to you.
What
are the advantages and disadvantages of Web-based learning?
There are many advantages
to online and computer-based learning when compared to traditional face-to-face
courses and lectures. There are also disadvantages associated with computer-based
learning as well. See a list of common advantages
and disadvantages.
What
are students saying about eLearning?
In a recent survey of ISU
students taking Web-enhanced classes using WebCT, students had the opportunity
to share their feelings on eLearning. Read a
collection of some of the students' comments.
What
does the educational research say?
Chadwick, S. A. (1999).
Teaching
virtually via the Web: Comparing student performance and attitudes about
communication in lecture, virtual Web-based, and Web- supplemented courses.
The Electronic Journal of Communication, 9(1).
The article describes two
studies that address the efficacy of Web-based instruction. Results
show that students learned most in the Web-supplemented mode of teaching.
No significant differences were found between the traditional lecture
course and the virtual Web-based course. The second study measured student
attitudes toward technology used in virtual and traditional courses
and the communication allowed through that technology. Students found
communicating via e-mail and the Web with their classmates and teacher
to by easy, effective, and satisfying. Students in the virtual course
showed the highest preference for those media.
